Capitol Steel Structures proudly welcomed students from the Florida International University (FIU) chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) for an exclusive tour and immersive learning experience in steel fabrication.

The visit provided students with a behind-the-scenes look at the processes that bring structural steel projects to life. From fabrication to specialty construction techniques, participants gained valuable hands-on experience and insight into the engineering practices that shape modern infrastructure.

“Hosting FIU ASCE students was an incredible opportunity to inspire the next generation of civil engineers,” said Ruben Diaz, CEO of Capitol Steel Structures. “We believe that bridging the gap between classroom learning and real-world application is essential for developing strong, innovative engineers.”

What is ASCE?

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), founded in 1852, is the oldest national engineering society in the United States. Established to share knowledge and advance the civil engineering profession, ASCE plays a vital role in preparing future engineers to design, build, and maintain the nation’s infrastructure.

With 272 student chapters, clubs, and international groups, ASCE provides extensive opportunities for professional growth. Student members participate in meetings, competitions, regional conferences, and educational outreach while also benefitting from scholarships, awards, and networking opportunities with industry professionals.

ASCE at FIU

The FIU ASCE Student Chapter is dedicated to engaging members in the evolving world of civil engineering. Its mission is to prepare students for their careers by offering professional development, networking, and hands-on experiences in the engineering field. By connecting students with industry leaders and real-world projects, the chapter helps its members build strong foundations for successful futures.

“ASCE at FIU is more than just a student organization — it’s a family,” said Vice President Cary Wingard. “Tours like this inspire us to continue innovating, learning, and working together for the public good.”
